People Can’t Believe These Stunning Cars Are Made in China

9. Yangwang U8

Yangwang U8

The Yangwang U8 is a full-size luxury extended-range electric off-road SUV — the very first vehicle from Yangwang, BYD's ultra-premium sub-brand. Launched in April 2024, it's best described as what you'd get if a Land Rover Defender, a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, and a sci-fi spaceship had a child together.

Think of it as a luxury fortress on wheels — built for people who want the opulence of a Rolls-Royce SUV with the off-road capability of a military vehicle.

The Lineup (China Prices in USD)

  • U8 Premium Edition: ~$151,000, Standard luxury spec, 5-seat

  • U8 Off-Road Master Edition: ~$156,000, Snorkel, roof rack, detachable ladder, aggressive bumper

  • U8L (Long Wheelbase): ~$176,000, 3-row, 6-seat, 24K gold badges, split power tailgate

Why It's a Big Deal

  • Size: Enormous — 5,325 mm long, 2,050 mm wide, 3,050 mm wheelbase. Nearly as large as a long-wheelbase G-Wagon. Weighs 3.5 tons.

  • Powertrain: Four independent electric motors — one per wheel — producing a combined 1,180 hp and 944 lb-ft of torque. 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds. For a 7,700-lb SUV. Let that sink in.

  • The e4 Platform: Each wheel is controlled fully independently. This enables:

    • Tank Turn — spin all four wheels in opposite directions to rotate completely on the spot, like a tank

    • Crab Mode — move diagonally, all four wheels angled the same direction

    • Three-Wheel Drive — if one tire blows out at highway speed, the remaining three motors stabilize the car automatically

  • Float Mode: The U8 can float on water for up to 30 minutes and propel itself at ~1.8 mph by spinning its wheels. It's an emergency escape feature — if you accidentally drive into a flood, the suspension raises to maximum, windows close automatically, and the sunroof opens as an emergency exit. You can even do tank turns while floating.

  • Range: A 49 kWh BYD Blade LFP battery gives ~112 miles of pure EV range. A 2.0T petrol engine acts purely as a generator — never touching the wheels — extending total range to over 620 miles on a full tank and battery combined.

  • DiSus-P Suspension: Active hydraulic body control with 5.9 inches of ground clearance adjustment. Processes road data via roof-mounted LiDAR to pre-adjust damping before hitting bumps. Approach angle: 36°. Departure angle: 35.4°. Wading depth: up to 55 inches (with snorkel on Off-Road edition).

  • Dashboard: Three massive screens — a 23.6-inch driver display, a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, and a 23.6-inch front passenger screen. Plus a 70-inch AR heads-up display, rear-seat entertainment screens, and a 22-speaker Dynaudio audio system.

  • Cockpit Extras: A built-in center console fridge/freezer (from -6°C to +50°C), three wireless charging pads, night vision camera, thermographic imaging, and an integrated satellite phone for off-grid communication.

  • Safety: 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Tire blowout stabilization keeps the vehicle composed even if two tires fail simultaneously.

  • U8L Bonus: The long-wheelbase version adds a third row, six seats, a power-operated split tailgate, and — most memorably — front and rear badges made from 24-karat gold.
