Netflix is officially heading back to Hawkins, and this time the journey is animated.

The streamer has confirmed that Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, the long-awaited animated spinoff set inside the Stranger Things universe, will premiere on April 23. The new series takes place between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original show, dropping viewers into the winter of 1985 as familiar faces return for another supernatural mystery.

Set during a brief stretch of calm in Hawkins, the story picks up when Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and the rest of the gang are trying to enjoy something close to normal life. Of course, in true Stranger Things fashion, that peace doesn’t last long. A new threat begins to surface, pulling the group back into the kind of danger they can never seem to escape.

What makes Tales From ’85 especially interesting is how it seems to bridge nostalgia with a fresh format. According to Tudum, the animated series keeps the spirit of the original alive while leaning into a younger-adventure energy, though showrunner Eric Robles has made it clear this won’t be a lightweight detour. He says the series still carries real danger and real stakes, even with its more stylized look.

That tone could be what makes this spinoff more than just a side project. Instead of feeling like a franchise extension built for the sake of brand recognition, Tales From ’85 appears to be aiming for something that actually matters inside the larger Stranger Things timeline. By setting the story in the gap between two major seasons, Netflix has found a smart way to revisit beloved characters without simply rehashing old ground.

The Duffer Brothers are back as executive producers, with Eric Robles leading the animated series. Flying Bark Productions, known for visually ambitious animation work, is also part of the creative team, which adds another layer of intrigue for longtime fans curious about how Hawkins will translate into this new style.

Netflix has been steadily building out the Stranger Things franchise beyond the flagship series, and Tales From ’85 looks like one of its most promising expansions yet. With the original show nearing its endgame, this animated chapter feels less like a detour and more like a test of how much longer the world of Hawkins can keep growing.

For fans who aren’t ready to say goodbye, April 23 might be the next best thing.
