Maya Hawke and Kerry Condon to Headline Netflix Mystery Series The God of the Woods
Netflix has officially found its leads for the highly anticipated adaptation of Liz Moores bestselling novel The God of the Woods. Stranger Things breakout Maya Hawke and Academy Award nominee Kerry Condon are set to star in the upcoming series, which promises to be a haunting exploration of family secrets and class dynamics set against the rugged backdrop of the Adirondacks.
The story centers on the sudden disappearance of thirteen-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family's summer camp. This isn't the first time tragedy has struck the wealthy Van Laar estate, as the new mystery echoes a similar disappearance from decades earlier. As the investigation unfolds, the family’s carefully maintained facade of privilege begins to crumble, exposing the dark undercurrents of power and long-buried secrets that have defined their legacy for generations.
Maya Hawke will step into the role of Judy Luptack, a sharp and determined investigator who is making her mark as the first woman in the male-dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Tasked with finding the missing girl, Judy must navigate a complex web of lies and social hierarchies to uncover the truth. Joining her is Kerry Condon, who portrays Alice Van Laar, the missing girls mother. Alice is a woman hardened by past grief and trapped in a fractured marriage, now forced to confront her worst nightmare as history seemingly repeats itself.
Behind the scenes, the project is in experienced hands. Author Liz Moore is taking an active role in the adaptation, serving as co-showrunner and writer alongside Liz Hannah, known for her work on The Post and Mindhunter. The duo expressed their excitement about bringing these complex characters to life, noting their hope that audiences will find themselves deeply invested in the morally grey world of the Van Laars.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, the series is shaping up to be a cornerstone of Netflix's prestige drama lineup. While a specific release date has yet to be confirmed, production is expected to begin soon, bringing one of the most talked-about thrillers of recent years to the small screen.
