Netflix Sets April Premiere for Dandelion, New Anime Based on Gintama Creator Hideaki Sorachi’s Debut Manga
Netflix is adding another intriguing title to its anime lineup this spring with Dandelion, a brand-new series based on the debut manga from Gintama creator Hideaki Sorachi. The supernatural comedy is set to arrive in April, introducing viewers to a story that blends offbeat humor, emotional afterlife drama, and a pair of unlikely angelic guides.
Long before Sorachi became widely known for Gintama, he launched his manga career with Dandelion, a quirky and heartfelt tale centered on two angels assigned to help lost souls move on. The anime adaptation follows Tetsuo Tanba and Misaki Kurogane, members of the Japanese Angel Federation’s Send-Off Department, whose mission is to track down spirits lingering in the human world and gently guide them toward the afterlife.
But unlike the more efficient divisions that simply aim to close cases quickly, the Dandelion Clan of the 21st Division takes a more compassionate route. Rather than rushing spirits along, Tanba and Kurogane take the time to understand what each soul is still holding onto. Whether it’s unresolved regret, unfinished business, or fear of letting go, the duo works to help the dead find peace before their final departure.
That emotional core is balanced by the series’ eccentric energy. Tanba may come across as rough around the edges, with a constant scowl and a sharp mouth, but beneath that hard exterior is someone deeply committed to helping others. Kurogane, meanwhile, cuts a very different figure. Despite her youthful appearance, she’s said to be an incredibly powerful presence with a fearsome reputation of her own, making the pair an especially entertaining match at the center of the story.
Behind the scenes, Dandelion is directed by Daisuke Mataga, with series composition handled by Suzuki Yosuke, character designs by Asari Ai, and music from Yuki Hayashi. Animation production is being led by NAZ, the studio bringing Sorachi’s unusual supernatural world to life for streaming audiences.
With its unusual premise, emotional storytelling, and strong creative pedigree, Dandelion already looks like one of the more distinctive anime premieres on Netflix this season. For fans of supernatural comedies that mix laughs with genuine feeling, this one could be worth keeping an eye on as April approaches.
