Netflix has officially confirmed that Bridgerton Season 5 will revolve around Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling, marking a major new chapter for the hit period romance as production gets underway outside London.

The announcement came through Netflix’s Tudum, which also released first-look photos of stars Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza as the season’s central couple. The upcoming installment will place Francesca’s story front and center after the emotional fallout of Season 4, where she was left grieving the sudden loss of her husband, John Stirling.

According to the official setup for Season 5, the story begins two years after John’s death. Francesca returns to society with practical plans to remarry, but those plans are complicated when Michaela comes back to London to oversee the Kilmartin estate. Their reunion sets up what Netflix is teasing as a slow-burning, emotionally charged romance that will define the next season.

Showrunner Jess Brownell has described the new season as one built around “big-time yearning,” with a strong emphasis on longing, emotional tension, and the push-and-pull between duty and desire. She also said the series intends to frame the story around queer joy rather than trauma, while still delivering the kind of romantic conflict Bridgerton fans expect.

Dodd and Baduza have both spoken openly about what it means to lead the franchise’s first same-gender central romance. Dodd said Francesca deserves a love story just like anyone else, especially in a genre where queer relationships have often been overlooked. Baduza added that the team hopes to deliver an authentic onscreen romance that feels honest, hopeful, and emotionally satisfying for viewers.

Season 4 left Francesca and Michaela in a complicated place, with Michaela abruptly leaving London despite promising to stay. That cliffhanger is expected to become one of the emotional engines of Season 5, as the series finally explores Michaela’s side of the story and the deeper feelings that led to her sudden exit.

While Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date, the streamer has made one thing clear: Francesca and Michaela are no longer a subplot. They are the heart of Bridgerton’s next love story, and Season 5 looks set to deliver one of the franchise’s most talked-about romances yet.
