Amanda Seyfried is officially slipping into the glass slippers once again, but this time with a fresh twist. The actress has joined Netflix’s upcoming animated feature Steps, where she will voice Cinderella in a playful and modern reimagining of the beloved fairy tale.

Rather than retelling the classic princess story from the usual angle, Steps turns the spotlight toward Cinderella’s famously villainized stepsisters. The film follows Lilith, a misunderstood sibling who finds herself in the middle of chaos after a magical mishap at the royal ball leaves the kingdom in danger. When her sister is accidentally transformed into a frog and the fairytale order starts to unravel, Lilith is forced into an unlikely alliance with Cinderella herself.

Seyfried’s casting adds a major spark to the project, especially as the creative team promises a version of Cinderella that feels more grounded, funny, and emotionally layered than audiences might expect. Instead of a flawless fairytale icon, this new take leans into a heroine with quirks, vulnerability, and a little more personality behind the tiara.

The voice cast already has plenty of buzz, with Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu leading the story as the two stepsisters at the center of the film’s chaos and redemption arc. Together, the trio sets up what could be one of Netflix’s more unexpected animated releases, mixing fantasy, comedy, and a softer look at characters long painted as the villains.

Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, Steps is shaping up as a fairy-tale remix that wants to challenge old assumptions without losing the fun. Early details suggest the movie will blend heartfelt themes of belonging and second chances with the kind of fast-moving adventure that fits a family-friendly animated feature.

With Netflix continuing to build out its animation slate, Steps already stands out for taking a familiar story and flipping it just enough to feel new. And with Amanda Seyfried lending her voice to a more human, more relatable Cinderella, the film may end up giving audiences a version of the character that feels surprisingly fresh.

Steps is currently set to debut on Netflix in 2026.
