Adam Sandler is heading back to Netflix with a very different kind of role.

The streamer has officially unveiled Time Out, a new psychological drama from filmmaker Scott Cooper, with Sandler set to lead the cast as a man whose life begins to unravel after losing his job. The project marks another dramatic turn for the actor, who continues to lean into more intense material following acclaimed performances in films like Uncut Gems.

In Time Out, Sandler plays Vincent, a husband and father who has recently been fired but can’t bring himself to tell his family the truth. Instead of coming clean, he hides the reality of his situation and starts building a series of lies to maintain the illusion that everything is fine. What begins as a desperate attempt to protect his loved ones gradually turns into something much darker, as the deception expands and the pressure mounts.

According to Netflix, the story follows Vincent as he becomes trapped in his own fabrication, eventually creating an investment scheme and pulling friends into it. As his falsehoods spiral, the emotional and moral consequences threaten not only his stability, but also the future of his family.

The film comes from Scott Cooper, who is writing, directing, and producing the project. Cooper, known for The Pale Blue Eye, Hostiles, and Crazy Heart, described the material as one that has stayed with him for years. The new movie is based on the French film L’Emploi du temps, originally developed by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo, with Cooper reimagining the story for a contemporary audience.

Time Out also features a strong supporting lineup. Alongside Sandler, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Gaby Hoffmann, F. Murray Abraham, Steve Zahn, and Adam Horovitz. With that ensemble and Cooper’s track record in moody, character-driven dramas, the film is already shaping up as one of Netflix’s more intriguing upcoming originals.

At the moment, Netflix has not announced an official release date for Time Out. For now, the project remains one to watch, especially for viewers curious to see Sandler return to the kind of high-stakes dramatic territory that has earned him some of the best reviews of his career.
